Research · Shorthand models

An AI model that thinks in shorthand.

Short notes first, a plain answer after. Fewer tokens, so the answer comes sooner.

Before an AI answers, it writes out its thinking. That can take hundreds of tokens you usually don't see. Shorthand writes its thinking in symbols, then answers in plain language.

How it works

The saving comes from the thinking.

The more a question makes a model think, the more Shorthand saves. Three signs, one token.

  1. First it makes short notes.

The goal, the facts and each step become a line of symbols instead of paragraphs of reasoning.

  2. Then it answers in plain language.

What you read is a normal answer. Only the thinking you never see gets shorter.

Recorded demo runs of a fine-tune of Qwen3.8-27B against Qwen3.8-27B. Three questions, not a benchmark. Code is the least predictable category.

One question, two ways of thinking

Five runners finish a race. Who finished second?

Ann finished before Bo but after Cy. Di finished right after Bo. Ed finished last. Both models answer Ann.

Base model 339 tokens · 4.7 s
We need answer simple logic puzzle. Let's solve carefully.

Runners: Ann, Bo, Cy, Di, Ed. Finishing order 1st to 5th.
Statements:
- Ann finished before Bo but after Cy. So Cy < Ann < Bo (where smaller finish number = earlier).
- Di finished right after Bo. So Bo immediately before Di: positions Bo = n, Di = n+1.
- Ed finished last. Position 5 = Ed.

Shorthand 116 tokens · 1.6 s
★ 𓎽𓍯𓋹𓂝: finish order → who 2nd
△ Ann before Bo, after Cy ⇒ Cy < Ann < Bo
△ Di right after Bo ⇒ Bo < Di consecutive
△ Ed last ⇒ Ed = 5
▪ 5 positions: Cy, Ann, Bo, Di, Ed
▪ Ed last → first four = Cy Ann Bo Di
▪ sequence Cy Ann Bo Di Ed
✓ 2nd = Ann
✅ 𓄿𓈖𓂋: Ann
