Reading the energy indicator

Open the footprint indicator in Chat and use Energy & impact in Settings to understand your account’s reported energy use.

By GreenPT · 1 min read · English

The footprint indicator near the Chat composer shows the energy attributed to the conversation. It uses watt-hours (Wh) and a footprint label. During generation it can show energy used so far.

Read the number

  1. Send a message and let the answer finish.
  2. Select the footprint indicator near the composer to inspect the available detail.
  3. Open Settings, then Energy & impact for account-level information.

A conversation total includes more than the latest sentence on screen. Follow-up messages and additional processing can increase it. A missing reading is not evidence of zero energy use.

Interpret it carefully

Use the number to understand reported usage, rather than as a complete lifecycle footprint for your device, network and model training. Shorter inputs and outputs can reduce unnecessary work. Read How the energy indicator works for scope and methodology links.
